These items will be used to help my students with their phonemic awareness. Using sand and other sensory items helps create a multi-sensory association with letter sounds and phonics rules, as proven by Orton-Gillingham. Using the sand to practice letters and letter sounds also helps with spelling. I am always looking for ways to engage my students and I know they would enjoy using the sand during phonics instruction. Not only will the sand be used for phonics instruction, but also for my students who might need a sensory break.
