Scaffolding and differentiation are necessary for special education teachers to meet students where they are and appropriately present the subject matter. Doodle Notes through Teachers Pay Teachers are another note-taking strategy where graphics are used to activate the visual pathways of the brain. When working through a Doodle Note page, students complete a variety of tasks, including coloring, doodling, and embellishing. My special education students in chemistry will be introduced to new information, perform tasks, practice new skills, and build memory connections in their brains while completing Doodle Notes. Visual analogies are embedded into the pages. Using these visual supports provides a concrete rendering of content to help students comprehend what is being taught. Visuals are more appealing than plain text and students respond to visual information faster as compared to text only materials. I have shown my current students many examples and downloaded free Doodle Notes when available. The students love them! They are all engaged and participating in learning because the Doodle Notes offer creative learning. The images on the Doodle Notes help English language learners. The coloring helps students with ADHD listen while completing a coloring task. Behavior students do not feel like I am forcing them to sit and take boring notes while I talk. I can modify each page of Mrs. Lau's Doodle Notes to accommodate my students with specific learning disabilities. Let's be honest: chemistry is not the most fun class for many students. Chemistry is not easy. It can be extremely hard for many general education students, often close to impossible for special education students. Offering Doodle Notes to my special education students will allow them to complete a required course for a college prep diploma while truly learning in a complex class. Thank you for considering us!
