As greater expectations are being placed upon students, they are being expected to spend more time at their desks learning, and less time at recess and in gym class. This is actually counter-productive to brain development and academic achievement. In his book "Brain Rules", John Medina informs readers, "Kids pay better attention to their subjects when they've been active," and "Kids are less likely to be disruptive in terms of their classroom behavior when they are active." A lack of activity impairs attentiveness and academic performance. When students exercise, their brains are able to work better as oxygen is increased to the brain. (Brain Rules by John Medina). Sitting at a desk for the majority of a day does not allow for the movement that students need. Under the desk exercise bikes will provide my students with the opportunity to move while they learn, thereby improving learning and achievement.
