Students need to see themselves in books. When they read about characters that look like them and share the same cultural experience, motivation and engagement increase. When they read about historical figures that have made a difference, they become inspired. Reading becomes more than just decoding and comprehension, it becomes part of their identity. Striving readers at our school need access to these kinds of books at levels they can read. The books will be housed in our school book room, a centralized library with multiple copies of leveled text. Organizing books this way allows more teachers/students access to the materials. Teachers will use these books in small group instruction during readers' workshop, grades 3-5.
