All of my special needs students come to my class with the hopes of developing the basic skills needed to support their vocational aspirations and daily life. The items listed will allow us to create a classroom store and practice the skills necessary to work in a store or store-like environment. The money management game set will allow students to practice their money skills, reinforcing the instruction they receive in the classroom. I plan to use the games as centers, in peer evaluation activities, and in individual instruction to support their activities and tasks in the store. Not only will the storage furniture, cash registers, and money management games allow my students to develop money-related skills, they will also allow students to acquire functional life skills. My students will be cooking and putting together food items to sell in their store. Some of these items will include pizza snacks, rice crispy treats, chex mix, muffins, and much more. This will allow them to practice following a recipe, working with food, time management, prioritization, multi-tasking, serving others, etc. Students will also be required to keep their store clean, promoting functional life skills. Each student will get a weekly allowance that they can spend in the store to buy food items on Fridays. Throughout the week, they will work on making the items they want in the store that week. They will be required to work as a "staff" to make these decisions, put together a shopping list, shop for the items needed, put together the food items, make the store schedule, and take turns working shifts on Fridays. Not only will the cashiers get plenty of practice with money, but the shoppers will as well.
