My very excited first grade students missed a lot of reading practice with real books due to the pandemic and virtual learning during their kindergarten year. They have been working so hard to learn the kindergarten sight words. Every time they see a word in a book, they run to show it to me. Unfortunately, the sight words are the only ones they can pick out of the books right now. We need books that highlight sight words and present high interest topics to the super curious minds of my first graders. While learning basic sight words, my students can simultaneously also boost their knowledge of science and social studies. We can build curiosity and encourage them to move towards more advanced topics. The Rebus books will build their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. The sight word workbooks will give them an opportunity for more practice at home. They need every opportunity we can provide to make up for the learning they lost due to the pandemic.
