The 3D printer is a tool that will enable my students to design, create and explore possibilities that most of us never thought were possible. Students in my fourth grade classroom are engaged and excited learners. They like to explore their environment and learn new things and are confident with a wide range of technology. The 3D printer, however, is a tool that is new to them and will activate their natural curiosity and willingness to explore. Because of their desire to learn about a variety of topics they routinely investigate traditional sources of information such as printed material, videos, and websites. The use of this printer will take their learning to a new level as they transform 2-dimensional images into 3-dimensional objects which may be experienced through sight, touch, and feel. In fourth grade when we study the structure and function of different parts of the body in both humans and animals, and the printer will now make it possible for the students to hold these objects in their own hands and explore them from all directions. For instance, when students are comparing the eye of a gecko with the eye of a human, they will discuss how the structure of these organs is similar and different and how their shape affects eyesight. After this exploration, the students could be asked to identify the features of each and design an eye for a new animal.
