At the beginning of each lesson I recently started to give each table group of students a bin of manipulatives as a "bell ringer". I used to give a worksheet at the beginning of each lesson and most if the time, students were off task, bored and disengaged. I heard about having a "soft start" at the beginning of class and giving them manipulatives as an open ended opportunity to fidget and play for 5-10 minutes. I was amazed at the difference! Students were quiet and so excited to build and do something with their hands. The mornings went from a difficult task right away to a calming quiet activity that they enjoyed. Students come in the building from all sorts of different walks of life. It is nice to have your first activity be fun, engaging and helping you prepare for more challenge throughout the day/lesson.
