Learning to play a musical instrument is not something that can be done solely in a classroom. The time students spend practicing their instruments at home is what contributes most towards their growth in performance ability. Like an athlete's daily workout, band students must exercise their finger and embouchure muscles, train their brains to coordinate these muscles with their breathing, and use their eyes and ears to refine their playing technique. When practicing on their own, it is paramount that students perform as they would during a rehearsal in class or a concert on stage. In order to do this it is imperative that they use a sheet music stand to practice with the proper posture and head angle, as well as to read the music clearly and comfortably.
