I need your help to build a library for my kindergarten students that will both foster their love of reading and grow their independence. I will use the bins from this project to organize the books in our library by topic. Picture and word labels will be placed on each of the bins so that students are able to find books that they are interested in quickly and easily. It is necessary to have many bins in the library because it will allow me to provide a multitude of different types of books for students to choose from. Additionally, using smaller bins makes the books more physically accessible to students, are they are able to independently move the bins on and off the shelves more easily. Currently, our bins contain too many different kinds of books, are too large and heavy, and have begun to break. I am working towards creating a classroom library that enhances my students' love for reading at an early age. My goal is to create an organized space where students can not only select books that they will love on their own, but a space where the students are in charge. Students will be able to "check out" and "check in" books to our library on their own. This will give them a sense of responsibility for the space, and help to build their confidence as they learn how to do more and more all by themselves. When students are able to explore a library on their own and take the time to choose the books that they want to read they begin to foster a love for reading. I appreciate your help in my efforts to create an accessible library in my kindergarten classroom.
