Part of my ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) program is goal based. The students have weekly goals to achieve in phonics and vocabulary. When the students achieve levels, they select a treasure from my treasure box. The most popular treasures are the art supplies. Children find a freedom of expression through art. ESOL students are often stiffled in their communication because of language barriers, but all children can be artists without language. While I currently supply inexpensive paint sets, crayons and pads, I would love to have quality art supplies that the children could take home and share with their families. I know the parents of my students may not be able to provide beyond the basics for their families. I imagine that art supplies coming home would be an outlet for all members; something to share and creative time together. And how proud the students would be to share their treasures.
