All students deserve to have a safe space to feel welcome and that their feelings are valid. As the school counselor, I like to provide a place for my students where they feel instantly welcomed and where they can speak their mind. Having a calm-down corner can be helpful not only while I'm working with students, but also if students get flooded with emotions while in a class. When my students get hit with the big emotions in class, they don't have comfortable seating anywhere in the school where they can feel "at home" while at school to help their emotions balance out. Providing a comfortable seating option can show them that my space is safe and a comfortable place to mentally unload. It's important for students to feel they are heard and welcome in school, and what better place to show that than the school counselor's office? The products I selected are versatile and can be moved in different ways to accommodate the student who needs to use them. The other chairs in my office are more rigid so it is hard to feel comfortable in them like I would like them to feel. I'm hoping that providing this option will help students feel calmed down during stressful school days.
