After teaching in various districts and classrooms over the years, I have noticed that students often have a difficult time reaching their pinnacle of success when they are bound to a traditional desk and chair. I see the greatest amount of growth and “aha” moments when students are collaborating with groups. At the moment, the only space I have for that work is either on the floor or outdoors. Adding flexible seating to our classroom will give students choice throughout the day. Their concentration will increase when they are able to rock back and forth, bounce, stand, and utilize spaces that are currently unable to be used. I want students to take ownership of their academic needs and be able to recognize what they need in order to be successful. This is going to look different for each and every one of my learners, but having different flexible seating options is a great first step in ensuring student success!
