My students love to read, and they are thirsty for novels that show characters that are similar to themselves. Often times my students cannot go home and communicate with their families. They are high school students who have profound hearing loss and use ASL to communicate, however their families have not learned sign language. Many of my students bring home books from my classroom to entertain them at night, they go through a novel a week and are always looking for the next best book to read. In class we discuss their backgrounds, heritage and similar qualities characters in books have with them. The majority of the books I currently have in my classroom do not reflect my student dynamic. I would like to build a library that is as diverse as my student population.
