My students need to increase their reading stamina before entering high school in the fall. These books will be interesting to them, and they will use them to complete 2 hours of weekly independent reading. The sports novellas will be high interest reading for my lowest achieving students, who typically only read, talk about, and write about football and basketball. The variety of authors will also build racial tolerance, ethic appreciation, and social understanding. My students are hard working and proud - these books will give them access to valuable stories and perspectives.
