For a special needs student, making connections is vitally important. Understanding that sounds are connected from speech production, to learning phonics to reading a story. Using a variety of materials and enhancing motivation through game play will result in turn taking and exposure to sounds in speech sound production, our world, and in reading. Much of speech sound acquisition is completed via drill and practice. Generalization of the skills can be most difficult. Using a variety of contexts such as reading stories, and playing games helps to practice sounds in a variety of environments.
