The classroom rug that I am requesting will make a world of difference for my students and their learning. Students learn best when there are clear routines in place for the beginning and closing of each and every lesson and activity, particularly when some form of movement can be involved in between each. By incorporating the use of a carpet as a central meeting place, I will be able to gather students for our morning meetings in a circle -- which is essential in building and maintaining our classroom community -- as well as meeting there at the beginning and ending of each lesson to review concepts learned that day and days prior. That way, classwork can be reserved for when students are at their seats and extended groupwork, discussions and learning can occur at the rug, our central place of gathering. With the addition of a communal gathering place at the rug to our classroom routine, as well as the addition of flexible seating options, my students will be able to engage more wholly and excitedly in their learning. I have many students now who will greatly benefit from having the option of sitting on Balance Ball Seats, particularly my students who need the stimulation of moving and fidgeting in order to focus and get the most out of their learning. The flexible seating as an accommodation for students in need, as well as the incorporation of a classroom rug as a central meeting place, will benefit the entire classroom community.
