Counseling can be fun and creative. Often students think of counseling as a dreadful task. Most of the time they are scared not knowing what to expect. By using counseling books such as mindfulness, anger management, and anxiety activity books I can make their counseling experience more meaningful. I would like to show my students that it is ok to struggle, that there is help, and that it is human to make mistakes. Using the little spot collection can help them understand emotions better. Students need to learn how to handle emotions too. Academics are always important, but dealing with emotions and family problems can be stressful for them. During a counseling session, I can teach them how toys such as fidgeting toys, playdough, and stress balls to calm themselves. At my school, we serve autistic students that have different levels of verbal communication. These fidgets and special needs activity books, such as coping skills, can help them express what they are feeling, they can show me their feelings. As a counselor, I can help my students learn how emotions are part of our daily life, and if they learn how to recognize, express, and process them in a healthy way, life can be a little easier. Art is a part of my daily practice, it helps calm students down and provides a safe environment by letting my student express themselves with an art set. As a counselor, I don't have any budget to buy the necessary tools I need to reach their social-emotional needs. I use mindset books, empathy workbooks, and art supplies to teach them coping skills.
