Creating a "take a break" station in my classroom will help my mod/severe K-2nd students calm themselves when things get too overwhelming for them. A take a break station will help them learn to self regulate, ask for breaks when needed, and have a safe and cozy place to calm down. Many of my students can become very overstimulated with lights and noise and are unable to focus when this happens. Also, due to COVID restrictions, students are currently not able to make use of the school's sensory room. The pop up tent, rug, and pillows will give them a special designated space to calm down so that they can focus on their learning. The giant timer will give them a visual and auditory sense of breaktime while also reminding them to go back to their workspace once the break is over.
