The materials I am requesting will make a huge difference in the way students learn, explore, and create different things to gain complete understanding while working in a group with diverse students who all learn differently. Working in this manner will challenge the students to take on different yet engaging roles. Students are Scientists, engineers, artists, mathematicians when engaging at this level. One project that we allow the students to think outside the box includes a story By Ashley Spires called the most Magnificent thing. The students will identify the steps in the engineering process (ask, imagine, create, experiment, and improve). The students will also experience some SEL (social emotion learning) as the character in the story gets upset when her designs aren't' turning out how she imagined. After the story, the students will do a challenge. This challenge will be to create the most magnificent thing and design a prototype. My older students will design something that solves a problem, all while using non-consumable building materials such as LEGO's, Duplos, Magnetic Tiles, Wood Blocks, etc. As an extension to this activity, the younger kids can discuss what they have created while the older students write about their most magnificent thing. Since we are on a 5-day rotation students are introduced to a new challenge every 5 days as long as we have the proper materials.
