I am trying to make two separate situations meaningful in my classroom. First, students are given a set time each day to read independently, but I've noticed many of my kids just grab the first book they see and pretend to read as they are unsure of which books they want to read. While I am all for taking mental breaks, I want my students to use this time meaningfully, so I started giving them easy, interesting reads that discuss real-world issues so that we can discuss them as a whole-group. Right now, they are finishing up Monster by Walter Dean Myers, so I am looking towards my next book. Having said that... In this hyper-connected world where students are glued to their phones, they are starting to lose touch with the power of their words and the impact of social media, which is why I want our next book to be Dear Evan Hansen. I have never seen more stress and anxiety about technology before, and on top of that, I am hearing kids use dangerous language in a joking manner, but I am afraid that it is going too far. Therefore, as their English Language Arts teacher, I want to refine the art of their language use by helping them understand the power of their words-- both the impact of positive language use, and the impact of negative language use.
