My students in Bridgeport have extremely high oral literary comprehension skills. When I read to them, they directly connect to vocabulary, metaphor, plot, character, and the beauty in literary devices. If they can follow along, holding a copy of a novel, I know they will benefit from hands-on learning, appreciating the quality of the font, words --- the beautiful intimacy of reading on the page. Books represent a dignified tradition between reader and author which I want my students to experience directly with 'The Fire Keeper's Daughter,' a new YA novel which offers an important complex cultural lens for us all to share.
