My students are very gifted and most have a natural knack for art and entertaining. Lunch in the quad is full of energy and music as everyone enjoys a break. We are only 15 miles from Hollywood, but many have never been. Yet! My students reflect on their harsh environmental experiences, and use their talent to create beautiful art and imagine a better life for themselves. This means of escapism from the poverty and crime surrounding them allows them the freedom to be children as well as motivates them to strive for success. With the film and entertainment industry making up double digit percentages in the workforce in Los Angeles, and Hollywood being the highest grossing filmmaking location globally, my students deserve the opportunity to gain education and experience which will allow them to compete with the thousands of people moving to their home city annually in search for entertainment jobs.
