Learning a new language is daunting - especially when you need that language to go through the school day! With our newcomer students or our youngest English Learners, visuals and photo cards are the best way to help them gain language and to express themselves. We have many students whose home languages aren't supported through translation apps, so these cards are a great way for them to help show their ideas.
These updated photo cards will help students with vocabulary acquisition as well as expressing their ideas and their emotions. Our current picture cards are either low-quality printouts, or are outdated - all the photos of telephones have cords, and there aren't any pictures of computers, for example. The updated cards also feature more diverse people and ideas, so students can find examples that look like themselves.
These cards will help support teaching vocabulary, as well as helping English Learners show their understanding in content areas like science. Using the pictures, they can show what they know more effectively even when their English language skills are still developing. They are also helpful in social emotional support and restorative justices sessions with English Learner students! I've seen students with no English be able to help explain a disagreement through visual cards. They're especially helpful for our students who are both English Learners and students with Special Education needs. With these cards, we can better support our English Learners as they navigate the school day in a new language!
