The pandemic has hampered learning in unexpected ways. One of the more noticeable ways has been the limited access to high quality books. I have noticed this year, our first full year back in person, that kids aren't reading the same books. Their interest in reading has waned. One of the ways I am hoping to spark that interest is by getting them new books that they have selected themselves. A new book by itself is exciting for students, but one that they personally chose adds extra excitement. Students who read 20 minutes a day will be exposed to almost 2 million words a year. This benefit cannot be understated. These students are also more likely to score higher on standardized assessments and see more success in school. This project will help me get my students on the path to success.
