Twelfth-grade students typically read a dystopian text as it is an important concept to learn about and explore. I strongly believe my students will connect more to this genre by reading The Handmaid's Tale rather than the DCPS chosen text, not only because it is a largely female class, but because the themes are ones we often discuss. This novel set will be used by my AP Literature class to explore themes around dystopia, identity, freedom and restriction, feminism, and the human condition. Students will benefit from seeing the focus on female characters and the female experience. Some of the connections we will make in class will be to the current culture and climate for women in America and the decisions of lawmakers.
