The materials requested here will be used for some specific projects as well as some more open-ended expression of ideas. For example, play-dough will be used to model layers of the Earth for 4th graders, and will be used for 1st graders to model animals with physical features that help them survive. Kindergarteners might use it for some more open-ended time with a satisfying manipulative. Markers are used on a daily basis in my classroom by all grade levels to allow students to illustrate their scientific ideas and bring them to life. We use them to draw scientific diagrams or to illustrate stories that are being read aloud (this "draw along" activity helps students focus as they listen). White board/dry erase markers are used for students to quickly jot down their ideas to share as part of a classroom discussion or their responses to questions that are posed. Construction paper is used to make model insects which have inherited specific traits from their parents. It is used to make "seasons" projects, showing how the Earth's tilt as it orbits the sun makes the seasons. We also use construction paper in life cycle models and many other self-expression projects. Having art and building supplies available in a science classroom allows students to engage with projects in a fun, hands-on way that is much more enjoyable than just paper and pencil. Thank you so much for considering funding them!
