As a newer teacher, my classroom lacks a large or diverse selection of books for my students to read. While all my students should be reading at a second grade level by now, there are some that read either far below or far above that reading goal. Expanding my classroom library to better accommodate the many different reading levels is essential to helping my students succeed now and in the future. Former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, "Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life, reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true." The second grade standards for English Language arts focus on students being able to read on-level text with purpose and understanding, as well as reading with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension (RF.2.4). My project is to add a wide variety of books to my classroom library to help students open doors to the future. These books will help my lower students be able to catch up and help my higher students challenge themselves. My dream is that these books will help spark a love of reading for all my students so that they will become life-long readers, always looking for opportunities to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
