Our special education students need access to the technology and resources they will need to operate and succeed in the world, and they love technology such as digital cameras. However, finding their place in the information age is not so simple for these students. Many of them deal with Attention disorders (ADD/ADHD), the autism spectrum, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These kids need the chance to try to incorporate new skills in a supportive environment. Many of them deal with slow processing of information and various learning disorders, and they miss social queues that others take for granted. They often have histories which include astounding instances of abuse, and art projects are very healing for them, as they are for any of us. I have also discovered many of my students are visual learners, and I try to adapt our material to their learning styles and our goals to their learning needs.
