In class, I regularly use novel studies to teach our reading standards. I find novels to be more captivating and engaging for students versus the short stories found in our curriculum. Students become enthralled in their studies and want to read more and are highly motivated by using novels to learn. Having a class set of novels so each student has their own copy to follow along with, is ideal to support engagement. Reading classics, like Indian in the Cupboard, inspire students to read book series and it encourages students to read beyond just what we read in class. Over the years books are loved so dearly that they become harder and harder to reuse. Some books need to be retired and replaced with newer ones so that more students can love the rich stories inside.
