My students are amazing, but the pandemic has taken its toll on them in a way that I had not expected. They have been isolated for the most part since they were very young. Their social skills are way behind. In a world where academic skills are often viewed as the priority, social-emotional skill development may not always be at the forefront of most parents’ and teachers’ minds. However, research has shown that social-emotional skills are crucial for children to become successful both socially and academically. My students are kind and caring, but they need to know how to express this. Through weekly "Little Spot" lessons, we will explore how to express ourselves and deal with a wide range of emotions and feelings in a socially appropriate way. It will give them the language and skills they need to navigate through their lives.
