In order to empower my first graders to take part in their own education, I would like to provide them with more hands-on STEM activities as well as math manipulatives. Due to COVID, not only do I need a wider selection of activities and manipulatives but a larger quantity of these items as well. When students are introduced to a new math standard or concept using hands-on manipulatives, they are able to learn and experience these standards and concepts concretely before transitioning into the more abstract pictures or equations. Additionally, students that are given time to work in groups on open ended STEM building projects through exploration will work on group skills and continue to use their imagination during a time when screen time is at an all time high and imaginative play is at an all time low.
