Hawai'i may be paradise, but for most who live here, life isn't easy. My students are part of a community struggling to rebuild and strengthen after the plantation economy collapsed a generation ago. Two years ago, this community decided to take back from the state control of the school that had been a center of the community for over 100 years, and re-establish it as a charter school. I am so excited to be a part of this school as the science teacher for middle and high. There are so many opportunities in science in our islands, and I want these kids to have the chance to work and live here on their island, in their community. The challenge to build a 21st century science program is daunting, especially when most of my lab equipment dates from the 1940s-1970s. But my kids and I are up for the challenge!
