For many of my students, their physical education class (better known as "PE") is one of the highlights of their day. They get to socialize with friends, work to keep their bodies strong, and have fun. Because all of my students are English Language Learners, I try to make sure that while we are learning vocabulary. PE is also a "brain break" for them because learning curriculum in a language that they are still developing is difficult and can be exhausting. These materials will allow my students the ability to explore sports that they have never learned before. Being a small, specialized program within a large, inner-city public school district, our resources for PE have been limited in the past. With these supplies, I will be able to teach my students how to play sports like volleyball, badminton, street hockey, and tee-ball. We will also have better quality equipment for sports that they already have enjoyed, including basketball and everyone's favorite...football! (Which my students have learned, we call "soccer" in the United States.) My students face many challenges inside and outside of our school walls. My classroom, whether it is a gym, a stage, a field, or a blacktop, is a space in which students can forget those challenges, even if only for one class period. Thank you for considering helping my class to enjoy and experience these sports, which can truly be a universal language.
