Our Kindergarten playground is a block of cement with one tree and one soccer net set in the inner city. For this reason, Ms. Ramirez and I would like to enhance the recess experience of our 72 Kinder students. Approximately ninety percent of them live below the poverty line and have limited resources that include toys and experiences. Eighty percent of our students are English Language Learners. Many students struggle outside of the classroom in many areas of life; our classroom, school, and playground are safe places where our students can find success.
This project provides play equipment that will allow our Kinder students to enjoy using their imaginations, working together, and creating wonderful memories with this revamped recess. Students will apply real-world skills as they purchase grocery store items and place them in their shopping carts. They can also use the play kitchen to prepare meals for one another and they can take turns alternating roles. They will have endless hours of creative and imaginative play that will pour over into other areas of life as they rehearse problem-solving opportunities, dialogue with one another, increase vocabulary, and gain confidence applying various roles to their own lives.
