With this project, I am hoping to re-create some of the normalcy of learning math before COVID times. I want my students to use their fine and gross motor skills to move math manipulatives, trade them, and play with them, to make math a tangible concept rather than something they had to watch through a computer screen. Last year, my students had to learn how to compose and decompose a ten using the annotate feature on Zoom. My students had limited background knowledge of how to even count to manipulatives of ten because they were forced to transition to Distance Learning halfway through 1st grade. My students had a hard time grasping foundational math concepts because the concepts were intangible. This year I am hoping to give my students they opportunity to learn like the kids they are, rather than if they were learning an online college course. This is especially beneficial for the high demographic of students with IEPs in my classroom, that will benefit from the scaffolding of having tangible items to grasp math concepts to make them more concrete. My objective with this project is to once again make school an enjoyable experience where play and learning are intertwined to yield my students' highest potential for academic growth.
