As a way to engage families in the social and emotional learning of their children, I'd like to kick-off a project called "Lose This Book," and it is exactly like it sounds. The students in my classroom will be asked to read a book about kindness with their families and then "lose" it somewhere in our community. Someone else will find the book and read it, discuss it, and then "lose" it again. This effect will stimulate other people to be inspired by the kindness, therefore causing a boomerang effect in our school and community. Here's how this happen: The project will begin with a book tasting ceremony where my students will rotate through tables taking turns reading a part or all of the selected books. This will give them a true sense of what our project is all about. Next, each student will be assigned a book to take home to read and share with their families. Parents will be informed of this project with a note home and verify that they want to participate in the next portion of the project. Each book will have an outside and inside label about our "Lose this Book" project. After reading the book together, the student will decide where to leave the book in the community. The inside label will instruct the "finder" of what exactly they need to do. There's a catch. In those instructions, the finder will be asked to complete one kind act before losing the book for good. For example, hold the door for a stranger, smile at someone and say hello, etc. The instructions will ask the finder to write his/her kind act on the back cover of the book before losing it to someone else to find, in essence, creating a kindness boomerang.
