These books will help them with their reading strategy, creativity and agency. This year I have included an independent reading day in my instruction. We do this on Fridays and students choose their own books to read. At the end of the semester they complete a fun project on the books they have read. While students have been greatly enjoying the opportunity to read and get familiar with books that we do not teach as whole-class novels, both the students and myself have faced the obstacle of having limited book choice in my classroom. Students have been more interested in reading more recent books that I have managed to buy with personal funds or have asked friends to donate for me. Unfortunately, we have very few of those books and we still have a long way to go in acquiring a decent amount of high interest books!
