Learning to read is not an intuitive skill and must be carefully crafted, practiced, adjusted and practiced some more. The components of Phonics and Phonemic Awareness are two foundational skills that if not mastered in the primary grades will greatly impact the future of our students for years to come. Utilizing one of our curriculum resources, CORE (Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education) Teaching Reading Sourcebook partnered with additional activities from FCRR (Florida Center for Reading Research) website I will train the primary teachers on the impact of explicit instruction and providing multisensory practice opportunities using the materials ordered. To that end, this project is meant to provide the teachers I support with material resources they do not currently possess coupled with professional development to strengthen their instruction of Phonics and Phonemic Awareness with their students. These materials will provide teachers the resources to work in small groups using research based multisensory activities that not only engage, but contribute to building foundational literacy skills. It is my hope that you see the importance of funding this project and knowing that your generous contribution will impact thousands of students over the years to come.
