Students will understand experiences and events different from their own while recognizing ways authors use writing to express their voices and perspectives. Students will read independently various titles and authors, yet they will meet in small groups for discussions. Many of these texts will serve as mentor texts to generate ideas for student writing. Also, students will use these stories to investigate moments in American history to expand their understanding of historical events and movements. Finally, students will present what they have learned through digital products, such as presentations for their classmates on their topics for research.
