My students are amazing, hard-working, big-hearted, and so very helpful! With that bein said, they sometimes need that little extra motivation. The form of motivation that seems to work very well with them is getting to choose from the treasure box. I use this incentive for showing safe, kind, and responsible behavior (shown in many different forms), completing work (maybe not receiving 100% but truly gave an effort), as well as going above and beyond what is expected. Incentives for students motivate them to be more productive because they create a feeling of pride and achievement. For many of my students, whom are trauma affected, this is hard to come by. A large number come from broken homes, raised by other family members, in foster care, exposed to violence, drugs, and alcohol. Our community suffers from many suicides, car accidents, and missing and murdered Indigenous women. My treasure box will be used as motivation to reach for the greatness that they are capable of. However, I am needing some help to achieve this. Some of the rewards my students like are stickers, fidget toys, candy, squishy stress toys, and bookmarks (which they are always asking for). These items are not considered essentials by many parents so are not provided for their student. Every success story helps students become more self-confident. They are proud and also encouraged to achieve another successful result.
