These novels and additional supplies will help my students to think about others in the world around them and to develop empathy. Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, is an important skill needed to cope in this world around us. In our ELA classroom, each student will build on and practice empathy throughout the year. Each student will be required to read one novel each quarter (4 total), from a pre-generated list of ‘empathy novels’. The high quality literature have been chosen by the teacher because of the diverse authors, relatable situations, and relevant societal issues. The ultimate goal is to get each child to think outside of their world and to provide a thoughtful response to this question "What changed, challenged, or confirmed your thinking about life?" Through COVID and the social isolation of 2020, students have struggled emotionally, socially, and academically. This project will help them develop connections and practice discussing real-life topics we all struggle with. Some standards that this unit will use are as follows: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
