Who doesn't love hands on learning? Many students learn best when they are able to manipulate materials. Hands on learning allows students to work with others, problem solve, and provides an outlet for students who struggle with their written work. Unfortunately many of my students do not have the supplies, blocks, or materials at home to be creative. Having a variety of building, making, and engineering materials in the classroom will allow my students to not only learn about amazing topics through literature, but also allow the students to be engineers and creators of their own amazing projects. Many of the Nevada Academic Content Standards can be taught with these materials. There are science standards that focus on engineering and design for grades 3-5 (3-5-ETS1-1-2). Legos, Magnetic Blocks, and Marble Tracks will be used to create structures. Students will also work towards mastery of the library standards such as Foundational Standard 1 - INQUIRE: Build new knowledge by inquiring, thinking critically, identifying problems, and developing strategies for solving problems and Foundational Standard 5 - EXPLORE: Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection.
