I have been on the hunt for the perfect novel study to do with my students this year and I think I have found it, The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller. This book is about a girl their age whose home life isn't perfect and is learning to navigate that and her life as an adolescent. To fix what is going on at home, she has an idea of going cross country for that miracle she seeks. But she can’t do it alone. Her friends step up to show her that talking about problems is like taking a plant out of a dark cupboard and exposing it to the sun. With their help, Natalie begins an unforgettable journey to discover the science of hope, love, and miracles. I have first-hand seen what the pandemic has done emotionally to our students and many of them are struggling. It is my hope that with this novel, we can openly talk about mental health and the importance of seeking help, guidance, and a friend who will listen through our character's journey. In order to do a proper novel study, it is important for each student to have their own copy of the book. Not only do I think the book's theme and message will make an impact on our students, but reading a book cover to cover will give them the confidence they need to continue reading. Our class reading level ranges and this book is a level that all will be able to access. Seeing the words and reading along will continue to help with their vocabulary and writing skills.
