The school shutdowns in 2020 had a negative impact on the mental health of so many students. As a high school teacher, I have seen firsthand how my students are struggling to reconnect and re-engage in the classroom. I have also witnessed many students fighting to overcome anxiety and depression. For many of my students, school is the only safe place they have and when the schools shut down they were left to fend for themselves. Now that schools have reopened, students finally have a safe place once again but they have been traumatized and need help. One way I am helping students is by teaching them how to use art to channel their emotions and express themselves. My art class has been a safe place for students to learn to use art as a way to express their feelings and begin healing. It is my hope that through this project I can continue to provide a variety of projects for my students and expose them to different tools, mediums, and materials. Students can then use these techniques at home to help them cope under stress or to manage anxiety and depression. The confidence and peace that my students are feeling when creating art has been so inspiring. I wish to be able to increase the supplies in my room to be able to reach as many students as possible.
