Newly arrived immigrant students who have experienced trauma or living under a significant amount of stress. These students are more likely to be focused on threats, activating their fight or flight response. They may also be filled with doubt about their ability to learn. By incorporating books that capture some of the cultural experiences of our newly arrived students, we can help them develop a social network, feel as a valued member of their school community, develop trusting relationships, engage in positive risk taking, manage emotions and behaviors and take ownership of their environment and learning.
