Battle of the Books has been a fourth grade tradition at my school for over twenty years. Students are provided with a list of 60 books, and they are challenged to read as many of these books as possible over the course of three months. The books were carefully chosen to represent a variety of genres and reading levels. After reading each book, students have a choice between completing a project or a story map to demonstrate their learning. At the end of the the three months, we celebrate all their hard work with a grade level competition where the whole school community is invited! This competition is designed to help students' reading comprehension, foster a love of reading, and expose them to a variety of cultural texts. Unfortunately, during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, students were abruptly sent home during the middle of our Battle of the Books competition. The following school year, many students continued to learn remotely. Due to this, we lost almost all of our battle books and we were not able to launch a Battle of the Books competition for the 2020-2021 school year for the first time ever! With your help, we will be able to bring the joy of reading to our fourth graders and bring back a RES tradition for the 2021-2022 school year. Though this only covers enough books for two of five classes, this project will help us bring books into the hands of our eager and excited students!
