Our high school students are working to put books and art supplies in the hands of children housed in shelters for battered women and children, homes where they are surviving from abuse, and after school programs where they receive "sack" dinners --- their only meals outside of the free breakfasts and lunches they receive at school. Some of our high school students live in poverty and are even homeless, relying upon classmates to lend a sofa or warm bed. They recognize the importance of self expression, being read to, and what it means to be hungry, and want to help. These teens will work with the Underground Railroad, the Child Abuse and Neglect Council, and the East Side Soup Kitchen to raise money for food, but also want to be able to provide the children with books to read and drawing materials. Regardless of our teens' backgrounds, they all want to weave lessons about human dignity and kindness with civic responsibility and action through experiences with literature and art.
