Our middle school's library should be filled with fresh books, that tell stories the students can relate to, and most importantly that they want to read. In August 2021 I walked into a collection that has been sorely neglected. Of the 16,000 books we have an our shelves, 9,000 have not been checked out in the past 5 years. The average age of a book in our library is 2005, 41% of WMS Library's collection is 10 years or older. This makes it actively difficult to connect students with books they're excited to read. Day to day I'm telling students we don't have the next book in a series they started, we don't have a main stay YA title, and that the only copy we have of one of our most popular books is checked out. This hurts all students. Reluctant readers really struggle to find books in the library that they want to pick up. Veracious readers quickly run out of books to read. The library should be a place that inspires the imagination and connects students to people and places they wouldn't otherwise get the chance to know. With an investment from the community we can begin the process to make our library a magical place, with shelves full of worlds for our students to explore.
