As we welcome back our distance learners to full in-person classes, our students face many challenges with academic content, social skills and emotional well-being. In our music classes, we are able to fully play instruments and sing together for the first time in over a year and a half. An instrument that produces deep and gentle tones is a powerful tool for fostering engaged music making, and calming SEL activities. The Sub-contra bass bar is the lowest sounding instrument in the set of class instruments known as the Orff Instrumentarium. With it, children can provide their own accompaniment to songs and instrumental pieces. (Standard MU:Cr3.2 Present and Share creative musical work that conveys intent, demonstrates craftsmanship, and exhibits originality.) The low droning sound of the contrabass bar is also a perfect foundation for calming and stress-reducing SEL activities. It is constructed of durable materials and can safely be sanitized to maximize participation by multiple students at a time.
